Job Summary:
J. Goodison Company is seeking a Safety & Environmental Compliance Specialist to support and lead workplace safety and environmental efforts at our growing shipyard facility. This role combines hands-on safety oversight with compliance coordination to ensure safe, efficient operations aligned with OSHA, EPA, USCG, and other regulatory standards. It is ideal for someone who is hands-on, detail-oriented, and passionate about maintaining a safe, compliant, and proactive work environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Safety Oversight & Field Support
- Perform daily worksite inspections across yard and vessel operations
- Identify, prevent, and correct unsafe conditions, behaviors, and equipment use
- Monitor PPE use and enforce compliance
- Provide employees with real-time coaching, guidance, and support
- Respond to and report incidents, near-misses, and injuries
Regulatory Compliance & Program Management
- Ensure compliance with OSHA maritime regulations (29 CFR 1915), EPA, USCG, and local laws
- Manage documentation (MSDS, permits, reports, audits)
- Oversee safety programs: Lockout/Tagout, confined space, fire watch, fall protection, etc.
- Conduct incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective actions
- Maintain documentation and inspect safety equipment (eye wash stations, fire extinguishers, etc.)
- Maintain records related to hazardous/non-hazardous waste and environmental storage
Training & Culture
- Deliver toolbox talks, orientations, and ongoing safety training
- Promote continuous improvement and engagement in safety culture
- Serve as emergency responder and coordinate environmental release response
Qualifications:
- 1–5 years of EHS or Safety experience, preferably in maritime or heavy industrial environments (entry-level and mid-level candidates encouraged to apply)
- Knowledge of OSHA 1915, EPA regulations, and maritime/industrial safety practices
- Certifications such as OSHA 30 (Maritime), HAZWOPER, CHST, or CSP
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA 1915 standards and EPA regulations
- Experience with confined space, respiratory protection, and fall protection systems
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and safety management systems
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills; bilingual a plus
- Able to work independently and collaboratively
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in a shipyard/industrial environment
- Exposure to shipyard hazards, including noise, weather, heights, and confined spaces
- Physical ability to walk, climb ladders, and enter vessels as needed
- Available for emergency or off-hours response when required
